How Keto Diet Changed My Life

Why I started the Keto Lifestyle:

You probably know that I am a certified Essentrics® fitness instructor. In 2018, I noticed a common complaint by most of my clients—persistent belly fat. I could relate because I also had a bit of a belly even while teaching fitness three to four times a week (which included doing sit-ups). I personally assumed mine was due to having two C-sections in two years; therefore, the belly bulge must be something I needed to be content to live with!

Then, a New Year hit. As you know, this is the time of year when people make resolutions to improve their lifestyles. Several of my friends were talking about their positive results with Intermittent Fasting (or, IF). This led me to do my own research on the topic of IF. I had grown accustomed to believing that only those with amazing self-control could be successful at this!

A TED-Talk by Dr. Bert Herring gave me hope that maybe it was possible for an emotional eater like myself to do intermittent fasting. He said to try eating in a five-hour window only. He concluded that it didn’t really matter what you eat, just only eat during that specific period of time. Dr. Herring had done experiments with IF on others and noticed how beneficial it was for weight-loss.

But, for me it wasn’t about losing weight. Granted I wouldn’t mind if I had a flatter stomach, but I had personally gotten past the notion that being thin was necessary for a positive self-image. I just wanted to be as healthy and fit as necessary to do what I enjoy!

Continuing my online research, I found Dr. Eric Berg’s youtube videos on Healthy Ketosis and Intermittent Fasting. His scientific, research-based explanations was music to my “healthy lifestyle” ears. He explained the importance of using one’s body fat as the source for fuel, rather than relying solely on carbohydrates. Dr. Berg helped me to understand how my dysfunctional liver was the main reason my body was holding on to belly fat. This didn’t actually come as a complete surprise to me.

I’ve known for over ten years that my liver doesn’t detoxify properly (having been diagnosed with Gilbert’s Syndrome), which led me to study whole health education online via the National Institute of Whole Health. I learned that one’s environment plays a role in gene expression (called epigenetics), and a person’s social, emotional, nutritional, and spiritual aspects also greatly affect one’s health.

I grew up in a neighborhood that was developed on a golf course; as a result, I was exposed to an overload of weed killer the country club owners used to keep grass looking green and pristine. I deduced that this long-term exposure to toxins had compromised my liver’s ability to detoxify.

Keeping in mind my desire to improve my liver, I decided to become a Healthy Keto™ Coach in February 2019 through Dr. Berg’s Nutritionals. Importantly, this would allow me to accurately coach my clients on how to get healthier so they can lose the extra weight they were tired of carrying. Plus, it was enough motivation to try the Keto/Intermittent Fasting lifestyle for myself!

Guess what? I lost 20 pounds in a little over two months and gained more energy while feeling and looking healthier! The persistent belly bulge is gone. Currently, I am maintaining my weight by eating a low carbohydrate diet (not necessarily always being in ketosis). Better yet, I do not feel deprived at all!
